Should I Use Chemical Drain Cleaners?

Who doesn’t love a nice hot shower on a cold winter day? It’s either a soothing wake-up call to start the day or the perfect end before you slip into clean sheets. There’s nothing quite like it. However, all of those nice and relaxing feelings seem to slide away when you notice that you’re standing in 2 inches of water because the shower isn’t draining properly.

Why Is My Drain Clogged?

There are many potential causes for your clogged drain. Maybe it’s a kids toy or some debris, but the most common cause of a clogged shower drain is hair. Gross.

As your hair combines with shampoo and conditioner and slides into the shower drain, it creates a gunky mess that leaves it stuck either on the drain or just below it.

How Do I Unclog My Drains?

Just as there are many causes to your clogged drain, there are many ways to clear the drain.

It might seem easy or convenient to reach for that bottle of chemical drain cleaner but avoid it as much as possible. While chemical drain cleaners might be effective, it’s only because the chemical reaction they produce creates enough heat to melt through the clog. However, this reaction affects more than just the clog. It also starts to wear away at your pipes.

Instead, we would recommend attempting to clear the drain manually with an old wire hanger. All you’ll need to do is open up the hanger and bend a little hook at the end. This hook should be able to grab hold of any hair if that’s the cause of the clog.

If this method doesn’t work, then it’s time to call in the professionals. At Korrect Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc., drain cleaning is one of our specialties. You can count on our team of experienced plumbers to clear any drain in your house, no matter the cause.
