Why is it important to locate and test the functionality of your main shut off valve? It’s quite simple really.
If there is an unfortunate event in which pipes burst, water will be pouring out of that line until there is no more water flowing. The way that you can stop the water from flowing is to shut down the main water supply to the house. Shutting off the main water supply will buy time to get a full repair made.
As noted in Tip #1, the main water shut off valve can (most times) be located where the main water supply comes into the house. Typically, if the valve handle is in line with the pipe, the valve is open. But, if the valve handle is perpendicular to the pipe, then the valve is closed.
The main water shut off valve can be your saving grace when pipes burst, and it is important to know where it is located and if it is fully functional.
