How To Deal With Boiler Issues In The Winter

Old Man Winter Making His Presence Known

Winter can be fun as a kid, but when you're a homeowner, it can be a stressful season in terms of maintaining your home's plumbing. Harsh weather conditions can put a lot of strain on your home's pipes. One of the more common issues we notice homeowners face in the winter is dealing with a water boiler that is not working as efficiently. Here are some of the more common issues you can face this winter regarding your water boiler.

Faulty Pilot Light

If your pilot light is not working correctly, you will notice it immediately when it comes time to try to get some hot water. We see these issues pick up in winter because people may forget to clean their water heaters correctly earlier in the year. A dirty thermocouple can lead to a faulty pilot light since all that dirt build-up can mess with the ignition.

While a simple clean can help, make sure that your thermocouple is also not broken, and check if it is out of place. Make sure to always turn off the power source for your boiler before making any inspections. If you're uncertain, you can give us a call at (937) 837-2333

Noisy Boiler

A water boiler should be able to fade into the background, but sometimes in the winter, you may notice that the old boiler is rattling more than it should. A noisy boiler is a sign that you need repairs immediately. Sometimes there can be a build-up of limescale inside your system, causing the boiler to make those banging sounds and damage the system over time.

Another cause of your boiler kettling can be pipe leaks coming from your boiler or somewhere along with the plumbing in your home. While you may be tempted to check out the pipes in your home, unless you know what you are looking for, this is a job best left to our professionals.

Hot Water Issues

The winter cold can do a number on your pipes, and you may notice that your hot water is not as hot as it should be. Sometimes pipes can freeze if not properly insulated or prepared for the winter, causing you to get less hot water in the winter. You could also be dealing with a decrease in water pressure that can make getting hot water a bit of a hassle. These issues can mess with the water boiler's ability to stay on, and you might notice random shut-offs throughout the day.
