One of the most important things you can do during the cold is to locate your main water shut off valve. If there is any kind of problem, that valve will be extremely beneficial to you. If you don’t know where your shut off valve is, check where the main water supply comes into the house – you may be able to find it there.
If you cannot locate your shut off valve or if it is not fully functional, it may be worth your time to have a plumber come out and locate that for you or replace a faulty valve. That main shut off valve can be useful in leak situations – which can include frozen/burst waterlines.
