Why Plumbing Leaks Can Attract Pests and What You Can Do About It

person fixing pipes under a sinkEvery living organism needs water to survive. Pests are no different, and your home is among the places where they will search out water sources. Unfortunately, they have a tendency to find the most vulnerable places in your home, such as under sinks, near leaky pipes, around drains, in wet basements, and in laundry rooms.

If unwelcome house guests have been on the rise in or around your home, it might be time to find out why.

You may have to do a little detective work to see where they are setting up camp and spending a lot of time in your home. Investigate any areas where rodents or bugs seem to be gathering — especially look near plumbing or any source of running water both inside and outside your home. You may need to contact a plumber to patch up any leaks, as well.

Here Are the Most Common Areas to Inspect:

  • Under bathroom and kitchen sinks
  • Under the refrigerator
  • Near the waterline of a freezer, dishwasher, or washing machine
  • Under-sink traps and garbage disposal
  • Any plumbing areas
  • Pipe seals
  • Outdoor sprinklers or faucets
  • Gutters and downspouts

Here are a few ways you can help prevent an unwanted invasion in your home:

  • Plumbing leaks – a leak can attract many different pests because it is a steady, easily accessed supply of freshwater for rodents and insects.
  • Seals around plumbing pipes that enter the wall could be loose and leaking water. Pipes should be sealed with metal plates, rubber gaskets or foam insulation to ensure that there are no gaps. Pests will find the water leaking from any seal.
  • Inspect all appliances that use a water source. Water can leak easily from appliances, and pests will find any standing water.
  • Inspect drains and sinks for cracks, loose joints or incorrectly installed fittings that can cause leaks.
  • Check any sprinkler or irrigation system outside for leaks or loose fittings. Dripping water can cause foundation damage and act as an invitation for a termite infestation.
  • Keep outdoor plumbing well maintained all year-round. Be sure to have an adequate drainage system around your home and property.
  • Make sure that gutters and downspouts are in good repair, and keep them clear of any debris that can cause blockages.

All kinds of insects are attracted to leaking water, poorly maintained drains, roofs, and gutters. To avoid a pest invasion, fix leaks right away. It is important to do plumbing maintenance and check-ups on a yearly basis to keep unwanted guests from visiting your home.
